Signs & Symptoms of Spiritual Purging

Experiencing a spiritual awakening or purging for some can be mild or very intense and if you have or plan to utilize any of our spiritual/metaphysical items or services, read below to prepare yourself for some signs and symptoms of what you might experience afterwards.

It’s a personal journey where you learn to reconcile your lower self (or ego) and your higher self (or soul). As some progress through their spiritual journey, you will start to purge yourself of the unhealthy aspects of your ego. Being able to control and stay above it is golden.

But how would you know that you are going through a spiritual purging or awakening 🤔? Some things to pay attention to are...

1) You start to become more observant and aware of the things and people around you

That's one of the first things you will notice...Awareness!

It’s like being in a poorly lit room and someone comes in and turns on more lights. Clarity! You will begin asking yourself questions about your habits, and ask yourself why that is so.

Questions like, “I keep on getting angry all the time, why is this so?” and “Why is there always so much drama around me? Maybe I’m the one causing all of it?”

And as you ask yourself these questions, you will remember things you have done in the past. This is often unpleasant, especially when you recall times where you thought you were the one wronged, only to realize you were the one in the wrong. But that pain is just part of the process.

2) You suffer emotionally and physically

You will feel nauseated, drained, diarrhea, headaches or slightly feverish even. Pay attention to your body though and try not to sum it as purging symptoms. If you’re not feeling well for longer than 2-4 days and they're getting worse, make yourself a doctor's appointment.

As you go through your spiritual purging, events will happen that will make you emotionally unstable and unavailable. You will be tired, both physically and emotionally and could possibly feel sick to where "bed is life". But there’s a reason for that...Don't fight it!

That feeling of you not being able to ignore it means that it will force you to confront things you have been avoiding. Maybe things you didn't even realize were there, but have been holding you back all along. PUSH THROUGH! You will have to work through them and in time, they will resolve and you'll be one step closer to enlightenment.

3) You notice changes in your behavior

Spiritual purging is not a simple one-and-done event. Rather, it is a process that goes on for as long as it needs to.

The ego is so riddled with imperfections and is so detached from the perfection of the higher self, the universe won't set you up for failure by trying to close that gap all at once. So instead, you'll ascend one step at a time.

While on that path, you will notice the effects like you might realize that you no longer smoke or drink as much as you used to, or that you're less triggered by things that would've normally sent you to cuss somebody out.

A spiritual awakening is a rough, sometimes long journey that involves accepting who you are as a person and going beyond; not one built on excessive positivity.

And most cases the trials you face might not always be the ones you want to encounter. Don’t be scared or back down from this. If you resist or resent the changes to your person, you’re only delaying your awakening.

4) Your relationships start changing

The minute you start to change, not everyone in your life will be able to understand or appreciate that. Some might find themselves thinking that you’re going down a path they can’t follow, or that you’re slowly drifting out of reach. No more seeking approval or validation of others. You might find that some people will even walk away from you...Oh Well!!

People can try to understand and accept who you are, or who you are becoming or get gone. The only person whose opinion you can actually change is you, yourself. Remain true to yourself and don’t let the fear of letting go hold you back.

5) You’ll realize that everyone walks their own road

The ego is selfish!

The ego sees the world from a very “ME!" "PICK ME!" "IT'S ALL ABOUT ME!” point of view. It sees the world as existing to suit IT'S needs, and if something doesn’t benefit it at all, then it might as well not exist. Everybody is beneath it (with it's nose turned up). It thinks and desires to control others’ actions and have authority over their thoughts.

The soul, on the other hand, is compassionate and understanding.

Being on your spiritual journey, you become more in tune with your higher self. You shed more and more of your ego weight off your shoulders. You begin to see other people for who they really are; realizing they too have thoughts, emotions, and desires of their own.

And with that comes respect and understanding for individual differences that had, until then, been hard for you to deal with.

6) Synchronicity suddenly seems to be on overdrive

You might wake up thinking about a friend from high school, hop on social media and your aunt talking about them. Then you go to the mall and run into that same friend in the parking lot. Coincidence?! Naaahhh!

You may not be someone who's into astrology but, pay attention to important astrological events, like moon phases, the coming of the equinox, planetary movements for examples. You’re now more aware of the good things when they appear.

7) Letting go gets easier

Letting go is hard, whether it be letting go of people or of personal control over a situation. But purging—an important aspect of your ascension—is itself the process of letting go.

The ego is insecure and always wants reassurance where it can take it. From that comes attachment. As you let go of your ego and ascend to your higher self, you learn to surrender and trust in the universe to do as it wills. Peace and Contentment feels so good.

8) You will see through and dislike inauthenticity

As you become more confident in who you are, you will start to see through and dislike the shallowness and falseness of our modern world. In the same vein, you will start to strongly desire authenticity in yourself and in the people around you.

You would be as true to yourself as you can be before others, even when you would benefit more from pretending. In turn, you will attract people who are true to themselves as well. You'll no longer be fooled by people who will try to pander to you. You'll be able to feel it.

9) You no longer feel the need to stay positive all the time

In general, spirituality is full of misconceptions. That’s why a sign of spiritual purging is when you no longer feel the need to stay positive all the time.

Being overly optimistic is not a characteristic of spiritually awakened people. If you want to learn the difference, answer these questions:

When it comes to your personal spiritual journey, which toxic habits have you unknowingly picked up?

Is it the need to be positive all the time? Is it a sense of superiority over those who lack spiritual awareness?

Even well-meaning experts can get it wrong.

The outcome ends up being...You end up achieving the opposite of what you’re searching for. You do more to harm yourself than to heal and might even hurt those around you. Spirituality should be about empowering yourself. Not suppressing emotions, not judging others, but forming a pure connection with who you are at your core.

12) You will feel alone

While you’re undergoing your spiritual awakening, you will find yourself incredibly isolated. You are in the in-between state, with your old egoistic self and all its shallow comforts on one side, and your serene and reassured higher self on the other.

In your mind, you have neither the comforts your ego enjoys nor the surety and confidence of your upper self. You will also feel dissonance between yourself and the people around you, which is especially bad when your life is being flipped upside down over and over again.

That's okay because the right people will gravitate towards you and help guide you to your highest and greatest good. When you’re experiencing issues in life, your body often enters a “fight-or-fight” response, causing your breathing to speed up. This puts you in a state of hypervigilance and makes it difficult to confront your challenges head-on. Try doing some Yoga, Tai-Chi, Breath Work exercises, Aromatherapy, Reiki, or herbal teas to help.
